Emergency Services Try Again
By Leo Graham
CHESTER – For the third time since Town Meeting Day last March, Chester’s emergency services
(police, firefighters, and ambulance service) will ask the voters to agree to bond for a new public
safety building that would house all three entities.
During the past nine or so months the projected cost of the Public Safety building has gone from
something in the range of $8 million down to this proposal calling for a $2.5 million structure.
The proposed building will be 14,100 square feet with bays for all emergency vehicles.
Currently, the Police Department is housed in two rooms, one of which is the Chief’s office, at Town
Hall. The Fire Department and Ambulance Service are housed at the Town Garage, a space too small
to allow all of the vehicles there to be under the cover of a roof.
Recently, Chester’s selectmen decided not to place the bond issue on the ballot of their own
accord, forcing Emergency Services to get the issue on the ballot by petition. 250 signatures were
obtained in short order, several times the necessary number.
