Chester Woman Admits Drug Charge
CHESTER -- A bit of carelessness on the part of a Chester woman led to her being charged with possessing a
small amount of marijuana.
Layla B. Hastings, 35, pleaded guilty to the charge March 31 in Windsor District Court and was fined
$200.
She could hardly do otherwise. According to court documents, the marijuana was discovered in Hastings' purse
by security guards at Windsor District Court back in October as she showed up for a hearing.
At about 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 13, according to an affidavit filed by Windsor County Deputy Sheriff Philip M.
Call, "a lady entered the court lobby and presented her purse for inspection. On opening the purse, Deputy
Brittner stated, 'Phil, look at this.' I observed Deputy Brittner remove from the purse a small baggie containing
what, based on my training and experience, was believed to be marijuana. ... The respondent was asked if she
had seen the signs out front advising it was illegal to bring drugs or weapons into the court building. She stated,
'Yeah, I forgot that was in there. I'm here for a DWI hearing.'"
Call wrote that the baggie did, indeed, prove to contain marijuana.
In a supplemental affidavit, Call summarized Hastings' driving and criminal histories. He wrote that
Hastings is under indefinite suspension for both criminal and civil charges of driving while intoxicated, and has
been charged with, among many other things, driving on a criminally suspended license, driving without
insurance, and failing to pay fines.
Her criminal history, according to court documents, includes several charges of driving under the influence,
simple assault, burglary, buying, selling, possessing and concealing stolen property, and failure to appear for a
court proceeding.
Hastings has until May 8 to come up with the $200.
