Giddings Pleads Guilty

SPRINGFIELD
-- Springfield resident Harley Giddings, 23, pleaded guilty to two
counts of false pretenses in Windsor District Court on Nov. 18.
According to an affidavit filed by Springfield police, Giddings came into von
Bargen's jewelry shop on Feb. 14 and bought a ring in the amount of $757.90, paying
for it with a personal check written on a joint account with his girlfriend. The check
bounced, and when Giddings didn't make good, Springfield police were called in.
Giddings' girlfriend told police that she once had a joint checking account with
Giddings, but that the account was closed.
Giddings, according to the affidavit, told police that he had deliberately written
some bad checks at Shaw's Supermarkets as well as von Bargen's, and that he had
gotten into some difficulty with Ludlow police for bad checks written in that town.
Giddings told police that he would work with the affected businesses to try to make
good, and was told in return that the investigation would continue.
That same day, a manager at Jake's Park Street Market stopped by the
Springfield police station to complain that yet another of Giddings' checks had
bounced, this one for $50.89;Giddings eventually made the check good in October.
Judge Theresa DiMauro sentenced Giddings to two concurrent 30-days of
community service, however, according to a court document, Giddings was
admonished to show up and comply.
"If you fail to report for intake or if you fail to comply with your schedule once
it's completed, the remainder of your sentence will be served straight time in jail," the
document reads.
