Woman Denies Theft Charge
by Stephen Seitz
SPRINGFIELD -- A woman from Springfield pleaded not guilty in Windsor District Court
on March 31 to a charge of petit larceny in a December incident in which she was caught
stealing from another woman's locker at the Southern Vermont Recreational Center back in
December.
According to court documents, Springfield police were summoned to the rec center at
3:37 p.m., where the alleged victim told them that she saw Sherri Haines, 40, closing her (the
victim's) locker, and said that she saw Haines with a fistful of dollars.
"Haines then jammed her fist into her (Haines') locker," according to the affidavit. The
victim "looked at her purse and thought it looked wrong, and upon checking found that her
wallet had been moved and a bill was sticking out. She advised that she confronted Haibnes
and Haines denied stealing anything, and then ran into a toilet stall."
Another confrontation ensued when Haines withdrew a large wad of bills from her coat,
and, according to the affidavit, Haines started swearing at the victim, telling her "if I had
stolen money from your bag then you were only getting what you had coming since you left
your locker open."
The victim told police that Haines shoved her against the lockers and ran out. She picked
up the wad of bills amounting to $13. An additional $10 bill was also recovered.
Should Haines be convicted, she could receive 6 months in prison and be fined up to $250.
Judge Theresa DiMauro also ordered a psychiatric evaluation for Haines.
